What
We've Done
Yes,
Election Protection Can Make a Difference
2003
California Recall Special Election
The Election
Protection/Know Your Rights coalition
conducted a limited program on October 7,
2003 in California in connection with the
California Gubernatorial Recall Special Election.
The Election Hotline received some 550 calls
on election day, overwhelmingly responding
to confusion over polling place locations.
This confusion was caused by the states
need to consolidate precincts in the wake
of the expedited preparation and budget constraints
of the special election.
2002 Midterm Election
On election day,
the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights hosted
a nationwide, nonpartisan voter rights hotline
where volunteer lawyers and law students provided
immediate legal assistance to hundreds of
voters, mostly in Florida, Missouri and Texas.
Heres a summary of the Hotline activity,
state by state.
2000
National Election
The Lawyers
Committee served as lead counsel in NAACP
v. Smith, a class action suit filed on behalf
of black voters in Florida who were disenfranchised
during the 2000 election in various ways,
including improper purging of eligible voters,
polling place irregularities and public agencies
failure to timely and accurately process voter
registration applications. The case was successfully
settled in September 2002.
Pairie View A&M University Litigation
The Voting Rights
Project has successfully resolved two lawsuits
challenging attempts by public officials in
Waller County, Texas, to restrain the voting
rights of students at the predominantly African
American campus of Prairie View A&M University.
These cases represent the initial litigation
undertaking in the Projects Election
Protection Program.
