Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I register to vote?
What are the eligibility requirements to register to vote?
- In order to vote, you must be: a resident of Michigan and the city or township where you are applying to register to vote, a citizen of the United States of America, at least 18 years of age (by election day) and not serving a sentence in jail or prison.
Can I get my voting rights restored after a felony conviction? How?
- Any person convicted of a crime, who has been lawfully released from prison, has the right to vote. Michigan does not purge felons from the voter registration rolls, but changes their voting status. So, if someone was registered to vote before going to prison, he or she should not have been removed from the voter registration list on the basis of imprisonment.
Do I need to register if I have moved?
- If you have moved to another community and registered to vote there, you will need to re-register to vote. If you have moved away for a long period of time and did not register to vote in that community you may wish to check with the local clerks office to see if you are still registered to vote.

Where do I vote?
- First, try finding the polling place via PFAWs polling place locator tool.
- Second, try finding the polling place via Michigan's online polling place locator. Michigan's Voter Information Center is an online source for one-stop election information. Access information on your voter registration status, polling place, and voting equipment.
Can I vote by absentee ballot?
- Yes. For more information, including how to request an absentee ballot, visit this webpage.
I am in the military/overseas, how can I register and vote?
- If you are temporarily outside the U.S., you can use a Federal Postcard Application to apply for an absent voter ballot. The FPCA must be signed under oath unless you, your spouse, or your parents are serving in the armed forces or Merchant Marines.
Send the completed application to your city or township clerk for federal, state, city, and township elections. Send the application to your school district for school elections and your village clerk for village elections.
What ID do I need on Election Day?
- When arriving to vote, each voter, including first-time voters, must identify himself or herself by presenting an official state identification card, a Michigan driver's or chauffeur's license, or another form of generally recognized photo identification card.
Can I vote before Election Day?
- Early voting is not available to Michigan residents, but you may obtain an absentee ballot if you meet the state's requirements.
What can I do if I need special access to vote?
- Federal and state laws require every city and township to provide accessible registration and voting locations for voters who are disabled.
If you require special access, contact the clerk's office ahead of time to make sure your voting site is free of obstruction. If your precinct is not accessible, the clerk will direct you to a nearby site that is accessible.
If you require voting assistance, ask the election workers for help; a reason for the needed assistance does not have to be stated. Two inspectors will assist you in the voting station. An elector who is blind, disabled, or unable to read or write may be assisted with his or her ballot by any person of the voter's choice, except the following: the voter's employer or agent of that employer, or an officer or agent of a union to which the voter belongs.
For more information, contact your city or township clerk. Hearing-impaired residents may contact the Bureau of Elections at: (517) 485-5530 (TTY)
